United unveils Relax Row for long-haul economy travel

  • March 30, 2026

United Airlines has unveiled a new long-haul seating concept designed to give economy passengers more comfort and flexibility, announcing the upcoming launch of United Relax RowSM from 2027.

The new product will see a dedicated row of three United Economy seats transform into a couch-style space, offering travellers a more comfortable option for sleeping, stretching out or relaxing on long-haul flights. United said it is the first North American airline to introduce this type of seating and holds North American exclusivity on the design.

Positioned between United Economy and United Premium Plus®, the Relax Row features individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle, creating a more lounge-like setup within the economy cabin. United plans to install the product on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030, with up to 12 Relax Row sections available on each aircraft.

The airline is targetting a broad passenger base with the new concept, including families travelling with young children, couples and solo travellers looking for added comfort without moving into a higher cabin class. Customers booked in United Relax Row will also receive additional onboard amenities, including a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized plush blanket and two extra pillows. Families will also receive a plush toy and a Children’s Travel Kit.

United positioned the Relax Row announcement as part of its wider family travel strategy. The airline highlighted its free family seating policy, which allows children under 12 to sit next to an adult in their party at no extra charge at the time of booking. It also pointed to onboard children’s meal options on select services, a dedicated family section within its inflight entertainment offering, and its Sesame Street-themed Children’s Travel Kit designed to make journeys easier for younger passengers.
