The Grand Hotel & Casino readies its return on Port Vila’s waterfront

  • November 16, 2025

The Grand Hotel & Casino in Port Vila is nearing the end of a major restoration programme undertaken after the December 2024 earthquake.

Framed as “Rebuilt for Resilience”, the year-long project has been delivered with design collaborators Kas Makohon, Lukas Design and Vancorp, alongside specialist structural teams from Vanuatu and New Zealand. The works go beyond cosmetic repair. The Grand reports reinforced internal frames, the use of lightweight structural materials, and a comprehensive re-engineering of all key systems to future-proof the property. Managing Director, Bettina Mahieu, says the renewal represents a turning point for a Port Vila icon. “The Grand has always been part of Port Vila’s heart,” said Ms Mahieu. “This renewal is about more than buildings. It’s about confidence, continuity, and rekindling the magic that makes this place unforgettable. With its structural soul restored, The Grand is now ready to unveil its next chapter, a sanctuary of elegance, indulgence, and connection.”

Operator Zagame Corporation’s Director, Robert A Zagame, reinforces the sentiment. “It’s love embedded in structure,” he said. “We want to ensure The Grand doesn’t just return. It rises stronger, more beautiful, more alive. This isn’t a comeback, It’s a renewal, and it’s only the beginning.”

Perched on Port Vila harbour, the hotel’s positioning places guests within easy reach of shopping, dining and cultural attractions and, as the team notes, “a 15-minute glide from the airport to your first glass of champagne.” Upon reopening, all 74 rooms and suites will feature uninterrupted harbour views, generous balconies, European marble ensuites, floor-to-ceiling windows, high-speed internet and discreet room service.

For meetings and events, five elegant, modular spaces are being re-imagined to support business gatherings and celebrations. The wider offering will include:

  • The Grand Dining Room: a 90-seat harbourside restaurant with an island-to-table focus.
  • Cabana Pool Bar & Lounge: a relaxed poolside venue with curated cocktails.
  • A revitalised, luxurious world-class casino with upgraded gaming experiences.
  • 24-hour patrolled parking with private access lanes.
  • Immediate access to Port Vila’s CBD and Lini Highway.

The hotel remains closed while final works continue, with reopening details expected to be announced later this year. Updates will be shared at www.grandvanuatu.com and via the Grand Vanuatu’s social channels.
