Coupette at Hannah Street Melbourne – a bistro with polish, personality and perfect pitch

  • March 13, 2026

In a city that knows its way around a dining room, Coupette arrives with admirable confidence. Set within the Hannah Street Hotel in Melbourne, the restaurant is conceived as an all-day bistro and bar, bringing together old-world European cues with a distinctly contemporary Melbourne sensibility, writes Harmeet Sehgal

What makes Coupette so appealing is that it understands the enduring power of familiarity, elevated through thoughtful execution. This is not a venue seeking to rewrite the bistro playbook. Instead, it refines it with intelligence and charm. The spirit is old school, but the finish is basic, creating a room that transitions seamlessly from a leisurely lunch to pre-dinner drinks, a relaxed dinner, or a late evening linger over one last glass.

The atmosphere is comfortable and well balanced. There is a pleasant sense of energy in the room, but it never feels overly loud or rushed. There is a confidence to the setting that allows diners to settle in almost immediately, which is perhaps one of the hardest things for a restaurant to achieve well.

The food at Coupette is where much of its charm comes fully into focus. There is something pleasingly nostalgic about the menu a blast from the rustic past, if you will and that is very much part of its appeal. This is no-nonsense food that goes back to basics and does so with conviction. Here, spirited seasoning and spunky spice meet the deeper umami notes drawn from some of the finest regional Victorian and Australian produce.

The opening dishes set the tone beautifully. The butterflied giant Mooloolaba prawns, pan-sautéed in extra virgin olive oil with smoked paprika and crisp garlic, are full of character robust, generous and deeply satisfying. From there, the small plates continue to impress. The steak tartare is particularly well balanced, prepared with a deft hand and just the right interplay of shallots, cornichons and horseradish, finished with a rich dollop of egg yolk that brings everything together.

There is also comfort in the classics, and Coupette understands this well. The steak frites is exactly as it should be, a medium-rare eye fillet paired with Montpellier butter and crisp frites, simple on paper yet deeply rewarding in execution.

The drinks offering deserves equal praise. Beverages at Coupette are refined and tasteful, carefully curated to complement the spirit of the restaurant rather than compete with it. From a considered cocktail list to a succinct yet well-selected range of Australian wines, the beverage programme makes choosing the right drink feel easy and intuitive.

Among the standout pours, the Negroni Nuance is a compelling way to begin. Balanced and beautifully composed, it combines Autonomy Amber Aperitivo with MCC Dry Gin for a drink that is vibrant, poised and quietly complex, the kind of aperitif that sets the tone for the evening ahead. For Martini drinkers, the Avante Grandene Martini is not to be missed. Made with signature Four Pillars gin and olive bitters, it delivers clarity, character and a savoury elegance that feels perfectly suited to Coupette’s polished yet relaxed sensibility.

What elevates the experience further is the service, which is personable in the truest sense of the word. The team makes a genuine connection, with a deliberate effort to strike up conversation in a way that never feels forced or rehearsed. In a world so often filled with noise and distraction, there is something quietly restorative about that kind of hospitality. It draws your attention back to the table, to the pleasure of good food, great drinks and the company you are sharing them with. It is a small but meaningful gesture that encourages a smile, a different conversation, a shared laugh. In many ways, it reminds you that dining out at its best is not simply about consumption, but about connection.

Dining well should not always be about surprise. More often, it should be about balance, atmosphere, and ease. With its confident food offering, thoughtful drinks programme and warmly intuitive service, Coupette emerges as the kind of restaurant that feels both timely and timeless.
