Top gastronomic experiences with Hotel Cape Grace
- October 6, 2016
If in South Africa, try these foodie experiences at Hotel Cape Grace – one of the most celebrated hotels across from the waterfront’s shopping precinct and encircled by the tranquil yacht marina and bustling working harbour.
Experience 1: South African food and wine pairing dinner
For an exciting fine-dining experience, food-lovers can try a slice of South Africa with Signal Restaurant’s popular six-course tasting menu, created by Executive Chef Malika van Reenen. The tasting menus (one with meaty dishes, one vegetarian) are paired with premium wines from a variety of award-winning South African wineries throughout the course of the year. Signal’s Cape cuisine draws on influences from the many nationalities and customs that have shaped this region since being settled in 1652; namely Dutch and British settlers, French Huguenots, Asian traders and African cultures. The menu connects this colourful past with the present through innovative combinations and flavours that hail from Cape Town’s heritage. Tantalizing mains include bobotie-spiced Springbok, confit pork belly and soy-glazed quail, whilst dessert options include chocolate fudge cake served with vanilla crème and vanilla parfait served with rooibos jelly.
Experience 2: The Cape Wine Experience
The complimentary Cape Wine Experience is a tutored wine tasting conducted on a daily basis by Cape Grace’s in-house Sommelier, Marlvin Gwese, as well as Assistant Sommelier, Brian Mahlangu. The tasting takes approximately 45 minutes and provides in-house guests with fascinating insights into South Africa’s Method Cap Classique “Sparkling Wine”, Chenin Blanc “white wine” and delightful Pinotage, a red wine that is unique to South Africa. This tasting journey also acts as a great prelude to Signal Restaurant’s Food & Wine Tasting menu and is enjoyable for both novices and experts.
Experience 3: Tutored whisky tastings
Radiating Cape Town’s colourful energy and atmosphere, Bascule Whisky, Wine & Cocktail Bar sits alongside the Victoria & Alfred’s beautiful yacht marina and is home to an impressive collection of whiskies from nearly every producing region, including Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada and even Japan. Bascule offers insightful whisky tastings where enthusiasts not only have the unique opportunity to learn about the ancient and fascinating history of whisky, but also about the art of distilling, maturing and blending. The experience is taken to a whole new level by pairing whisky with various foods which enlightens palates to a new range of tastes.
Experience 4: Afternoon Tea in the Library
Regarded as one of the most decadent Afternoon Tea spots in Cape Town, this is an experience that should not be missed. Afternoon Tea is served daily in Cape Grace’s opulent Library or out on the elegant terrace, which offers sweeping views of the marina. Cape Grace presents an enticing étagère of tasty finger sandwiches, bite-sized smoked salmon and avocado mousse savouries, scones with lemon curd, strawberry jam and whipped cream as well as a selection of mouth-watering sweet treats. These delicious items sit alongside your personal tea pot, which comes with its own timer to ensure your tea is brewed to perfection. There are a variety of loose-leaf teas to try – including the sweet, raspberry-coloured Fruit Infusions and the unusual pomegranate-flavoured White Tea blends. The hotel also offers its own exclusive “Cape Grace” tea blend, a delightful combination of herbs, spices, fruit and rooibos.
